Following these simple guidelines will help you achieve the best possible whitening outcome while reducing the likelihood of sensitivity.
For the best results, your teeth and gums should be healthy before undergoing teeth whitening. A dental check-up and professional clean before treatment can help ensure the best possible outcome, as cleaner teeth respond more effectively to whitening.
Every smile responds differently to teeth whitening. Results will vary depending on factors such as your natural tooth colour, existing staining, enamel characteristics, lifestyle and oral hygiene habits.
While most clients experience a noticeable improvement, the final result will differ from person to person. Your technician will tailor your treatment to help you achieve the best possible outcome for your individual smile.
BEFORE YOUR TEETH WHITENING TREATMENT
AVOIDING STAINING FOODS & DRINKS
To achieve the best possible outcome, minimise heavily staining foods and drinks for at least one week before your appointment.
AVOID SMOKING
For the best possible outcome, avoid smoking or vaping for at least 48 hours before your treatment. This may also help reduce the likelihood of sensitivity.
LIMIT ALCOHOL AND ACIDIC FOODS
If you have naturally sensitive teeth, avoiding alcohol and acidic foods for 24-48 hours before your appointment may help reduce sensitivity.
MANAGING SENSITIVITY
Most clients experience little to no sensitivity during or after treatment. If your teeth are naturally sensitive, using a desensitising toothpaste for the days leading up to your appointment will often help improve comfort.
If suitable for you, you may also choose to take over-the-counter pain relief in the 30-60 minutes leading-up to your appointment.
Your whitening technician can also adjust your treatment on the day if required.
ON THE DAY OF YOUR WHITENING TREATMENT
Eat before your appointment
We recommend eating at least 1-2 hours prior to your teeth whitening appointment, as you may experience temporary tooth sensitivity immediately after treatment, making eating less comfortable.
On the day, your technician will provide advice on managing sensitivity should it occur after treatment.
BRUSH & FLOSS
We kindly ask that you brush and floss prior to your appointment. This will remove plaque, surface residue and food particles. To avoid irritating your gums, please allow at least one hour between brushing and your whitening treatment.
AVOIDING STAINING FOODS & DRINKS
To achieve the best possible outcome, we recommend reducing your consumption of heavily staining foods and drinks in the 24 hours leading up to your teeth whitening appointment.
DISCUSS YOUR DENTAL HISTORY
Before treatment begins, please advise your technician of any existing dental restorations, including crowns, veneers, composite bonding, fillings or implants. These materials do not respond to whitening like normal teeth do, so discussing previous dental work helps ensure realistic expectations for your results.
After Your Treatment
Your technician will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions following your appointment.
Follow A White Protocol (‘The White Diet’)
For the first 48 hours, it is imperative to avoid dark-coloured and highly pigmented foods and beverages. This is commonly referred to as the ‘White Diet’ in the dental industry and is encouraged to help maximise your whitening results while discouraging shade relapse.
If you are prone to sensitivity on a regular basis, it is encouraged to additionally avoid acidic foods and beverages during this period.
AVOID SMOKING
Refrain from smoking or vaping for at least 48 hours after your teeth whitening treatment, as this can affect results and contribute to new staining.
Temporary Sensitivity
Although uncommon, any sensitivity experienced is usually mild, temporary and harmless. Sensitivity from teeth whitening is usually mild and temporary, commonly resolving within 24-48 hours.
You will receive a comprehensive management guide from your technician on the day of treatment to prepare you in the unlikely case should this occur.
Stay hydrated
Drinking plenty of water post-treatment may support remineralisation, keep your mouth comfortable and support your aftercare.
MAINTAINING YOUR RESULTS
Like most cosmetic treatments, teeth whitening results are not permanent. How long your results last will depend on a range of factors including your natural tooth colour, diet, medications, lifestyle and oral hygiene habits.
Scheduling periodic maintenance treatments will assist in the ability to reach and maintain your goal shade.
Whether you’re working towards your desired shade by building on your initial whitening results or maintaining your results over time, our Top-Up Treatments are designed to support your individual whitening goals and maximise the longevity of your results.
